Young guests enjoy sustainable fish at Maredo

13/02/2012

The restaurant chain Maredo with its 57 sites in Germany and Austria only purchases fish for their fish finger menu from fisheries which are certified against the international recognized MSC standard for sustainable fishery. From now on anyone who chooses fish fingers from the children´s menu in a Maredo restaurant will see the blue MSC label on the menu. It shows the consumer that the fish was caught sustainably.
Fish fingers: popular among young guests

Maredo restaurants belong to the market leaders among the steakhouses in Germany. Fish fingers are especially popular among the young guests and are part of every children´s menu across the 55 Maredo restaurants in Germany and in the two branches in Austria. In these restaurants, 6.2 tons of fish fingers, made of the delicate white meat of the Alaska Pollock, are consumed every year. Maredo only uses Alaska Pollock that comes 100 per cent from fisheries that are certified against the environmental standard of MSC.

The MSC standard assesses a fishery against internationally recognized requirements which ensure sustainability of fish stocks, of other affected species and of the wider marine environment. The US American Alaska Pollock fisheries belong to the first fisheries worldwide that were allowed to carry the MSC ecolabel. The management of the stocks and the fishery is said to be one of the best and most efficient of the world.
First steps of sustainable sourcing of fish

The processing of MSC certified fish in the fish fingers of the children´s menu is the first step taken by Maredo in sustainable sourcing of fish. The Maredo restaurants in Germany and Austria qualified in independent audits for certification against the Chain of Custody standard of MSC.
What MSC says

“Maredo is the first full service restaurant chain which is MSC certified in Germany and Austria. The business takes a pioneering role in this area. In Germany foodservice goes a step further, companies like Maredo not only want to act responsibly by buying sustainably caught fish but also want to help customers find out more about it,” emphasises Katja Willeke, head of Foodservice at MSC Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
What Maredo says

Uwe Büscher, managing stockholder of Maredo, says: "Besides strict international guidelines for an independent certification program, the MSC integrated robust control mechanisms in its evaluation process. This gives us the assurance that MSC certified goods are coming solely from sustainably working fisheries. The issue of sustainability is an integral part of our corporate strategy. We are planning to expand our offer of MSC certified products in future and are pleased to be in the position to initially offer fish fingers in our children´s menu with the MSC ecolabel.
