Setting an example for environmental protection and sustainability

Many companies and corporations of the food industry have made it their goal to also make a contribution to the environment with their work. They want to accomplish a conscious interaction with resources, a sustainable production method for foods and a general reduction in harmful environmental influences.
Many manufacturers want to openly communicate their commitment to the public. They have their work in the areas of sustainability and environmental protection certified by an independent source. Fisheries can confirm through MSC environmental standards that their management is responsible and products exemplary. Their catch is labeled with the MSC’s official seal, which identifies their work as environmentally sound to the consumer. This procedure is not just used in the fishing trade, but also in agriculture where for example in order to qualify as sustainable agriculture by the German Agriculture Association DLG (Deutsche Landwirtschafts-Gesellschaft) agricultural companies must meet standards provided for the certification of their products. This system was developed in collaboration with the Technical University Munich (TU München) and the Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg. Companies get accredited based on ecological, economical and social indicators. During audits, companies need to meet up to 100 criteria, which -among other things- control water and food supplies for animals or hygiene, as well as shipment and transport. By doing so, sustainability in agriculture can be measured. After a successful audit, eligible companies can adorn themselves with the DLG certification of “Compliant of Sustainable Farming“. This certification process is not just intended to generally decrease environmentally harmful actions or to promote a reduction in the use of drugs and chemical substances, but it can provide measureable improvements for the well- being of humans and animals.
